Dec 2009 Post Doctor Visit Debriefing

By Courtney | 3 Rookie Marks »

So, where do I begin…My A1c went up .1 of a point to 6.8. My doctor however was impressed since it’s still below 7 and that’s good for me. Being that this is my last appointment for the year, I did not reach my goal to have an A1c of 6.5 this year. But, a piece of me really doesn’t care because I really didn’t try.

The big ticket items from this appointment, as logged in the pre visit briefing were addressed:

The fear of neuropathy. She never used that word, she took what I described (which I think I’ll save for a post tomorrow because it’s kind of funny) and said that it didn’t sound like anything she knew of and wasn’t quite sure what to do…so, I had some blood tests done and was referred to a neurologist.

The inability to absorb sugar while working out. Those were actually her words for when I was telling her about how I could go hours without insulin and still be low. She said that when I was eating while cycling or hiking or whatever I’m doing that the food is mostly just sitting in my stomach being unabsorbed. That my stomach isn’t working well as a muscle when I’m working out other muscles so what ever I take in is essentially useless to me, including glucose tabs. So she hooked me up with Dex 4 Glucose Liquid Blast and said that may have a better effect on me. So, we’ll give it a go and find out what happens :)

Mostly, I’d just like to be able to take somewhat normal amounts of insulin so that:
1) I don’t hit a wall because there’s no insulin in me.
2) I don’t get ketones because there’s no insulin in me.
3) I don’t end up being all naseous because I have ketones…

And then, if this stuff works, I can stop filling up my belly because that makes me sick too.

In terms of good news from this appointment, I’ll have an appointment every 6 weeks as was requested the last time I saw her and to ensure that it happens I have appointments scheduled all the way though April.

So, I guess overall it wasn’t really all that bad…
