The Best Way Not To Fall Off The Wagon, Is To Strive To Stay On It

By Courtney | 1 Rookie Mark »

The minute we make a choice that compromises whatever wagon we’re trying to stay on, we’re lost. We have just destroyed whatever we were working on building up.

Case and Point:

In the beginning of September, I started logging my blood sugars; I was doing good until about the 14 day mark when there was a weekend where I didn’t write anything down. It was hard to get back at it, but I did…but then, I decided that taking a break from logging on the weekends was ok. Making it that much harder on Monday to get out the log sheet and again, write everything down.

And then…(dun dun dun)

I went on vacation…

and this was the genius in me…

”I’m not taking my log sheets because everything’s going to be erratic and nothing’s going to be done on schedule and I don’t want to have to pull out my log sheet and write down numbers in the presence of a large group of people”

IDIOT!

I was on vacation 6 days, I came back for about 48 hours and was back out the door again on retreat…I didn’t come home and grab a log sheet and start logging numbers for the days I was home…nope…I didn’t take log sheets with me on retreat…nope…I went 11 days without logging numbers…

When there’s a gap like that, it’s one of those, I broke a habit and have no desire to recreate that habit. As I was packing my backpack last night for my day today, I had to force myself to grab my folder full of log sheets and put it in there. It would’ve been so easy to not log today. I had to make a choice/effort to get those log sheets and take them out them and write numbers on them today.

Today is the first day of me recreating the logging habit. I had to pick myself back up and put myself back on the wagon…well, actually, it might be dragging me from behind with me barely hanging on but I’m climbing back up, it’s just going to be a process.
