Fig Newtons – 12th day of the Athlete’s Christmas Countdown

When it comes to refueling on bike rides, I have fairly massive problems. Most of those problems stem from my diabetes, never-mind that I’m an athlete that needs to refuel.

I just don’t like to refuel, I think that I should be able to ride without stopping to check my blood and have a small snack. It bothers me to great extents. Like I said, the problems stem from my diabetes, if I didn’t have to check my blood and fear the high blood sugars I’d probably be less grumpy about having to stop and refuel. I’d probably relish in the fact that I got to stop and eat a small snack…I digress…

It used to be that I’d just eat GU. And then from watching other cyclists I picked up on the fact that fig newtons were better than GU any day. And they sit far better in my stomach than GU and my stomach doesn’t cramp during/after rides.

Fig Newtons are the perfect cycling food, for me anyways. Every 20 minutes I have one of them or a GU, I alternate. They’re perfect in the little packs that have 2 each. Shove several of those in my jersey pockets and away I go…

To the family member with my name as the person you get the pleasure of shopping for: I really don’t think that it’s necessary for me to tell you where to get fig newtons. But I will: any grocery store, walmart, target; any of those will work ;)

  1. I second the fig newtons! They even make the whole wheat version (hey, it’s me, what did you expect!) which makes me super excited. Good pick…and waaaay less expensive than Gu (but doesn’t fit as nicely under your bike shorts – cuz THAT would get messy!)
