2007 Last Check - Diabetes 365 Day 87 - Dec 31, 2007

2007 Last Check - Diabetes 365 Day 87 - Dec 31, 2007

I’ve never much paid attention to the last blood check of the year, but tonight it seemed worthwhile a picture…

I ended the year on a very good note…110…wish all my blood checks could be in this range…

Root Beer Float - Diabetes 365 Day 86 - Dec 30, 2007

Root Beer Float - Diabetes 365 Day 86 - Dec 30, 2007

One of my favorite homemade treats is root beer floats. There’s nothing like the goodness of some Diet A&W Root Beer (which is perfect for the night time treat because it’s coincidentally caffeine free as well) , with some sugar free vanilla ice cream (not seen in this picture because I was out).

It’s a fairly low carb diabetic friendly treat that’s good for anyone and anytime. Even when I don’t have diabetes anymore this will be the way root beer floats are made just because they’re good, it’s one of the better “sugar-free” treats out there that I eat.

I’d Trade It All In - Diabetes 365 Day 85 - Dec 29, 2007

I'd Trade It All In - Diabetes 365 Day 85 - Dec 29, 2007

At Christmas, I usually get gift cards because I want to shop for myself and I don’t want other people shopping for me. I was thinking though, this year, I’d trade in all my future Christmas’ and all the shopping I get to do for myself with the well thought out gift cards that I receive if next year instead of a gift card, I opened up a card and it said, go see this doctor, this is what they’re going to do, this is your cure to diabetes…

Box of Yummies - Diabetes 365 Day 84 - Dec 28, 2007

Box of Yummies - Diabetes 365 Day 84 - Dec 28, 2007

These See’s Candy Suckers have a story behind them. The short version, my Grammy used to have them at her house in a bag, and in the summer when I’d go see her they were a treat for my sister and I when I was little. They’re my favorite See’s Candy because of the history behind them.

Of course, when I was little, 17-19 years ago, there were Peanut Butter Flavored Lollypops. Now there’s just Cafe Latte, Chocolate, Butterscotch, and Vanilla (listed in order of favorite flavors). Each lollypop costs me 15 carbs and 2.5 units of insulin.

It was really funny when I opened the brown paper package that these were contained in, one of my coworkers was like “they do know you’re diabetic right?” (as they came from some coworkers in CA and that I don’t directly work with daily) I said “yup” and she was like “ok, behave”

I do behave, 1 a day (if that) and I share with my favorite coworkers.

Good Bacteria - Diabetes 365 Day 83 - Dec 27, 2007

Good Bacteria - Diabetes 365 Day 83 - Dec 27, 2007

Every morning, I take 3 good bacteria pills to help keep me healthy. After spending one winter deathly ill, mom decided it would be better for me to take the stupid pills (as I call them) and be healthy rather than not taking them and being sick for 6 months.

It’s one more stupid thing I have to do everyday to keep myself healthy, of course, if my diabetes were gone, I probably wouldn’t have to take the dumb things in the first place…

E-2 = BRRR…I’m Cold - Diabetes 365 Day 82 - Dec 26, 2007

E-2 = BRRR...I'm Cold - Diabetes 365 Day 82 - Dec 26, 2007

So, my machine kindof sat in the car for the duration of a movie because I didn’t want to carry my bag into the theatre, I just wanted to go into the theatre as me, with no baggage…when it was all said and done and I got back out to my car and needed to check my blood, I couldn’t, because the machine was too cold, even after the 15 min drive home, it was too cold.

Apparently, we have to take better care of our stuff, because it will freeze just like we do if left in the car on a cold winter’s day. But lucky for me, I remembered Kerri’sconversation with her cold meter and was able to warm mine up quite quickly after sticking it under my armpit.

Tradition - Diabetes 365 Day 81 - Dec 25, 2007

Tradition - Diabetes 365 Day 81 - Dec 25, 2007

I don’t know its real name, and it may not look so good in the picture, but it’s delicious in real life. It’s what I call Tradition because every Christmas Grandma would make it. It’s got strawberry Jello, frozen evaporated milk, and vanilla wafer topping in it (and possibly some other ingredients but I’m not sure what).

A few years after becoming a diabetic, this Christmas Tradition ceased to exist because it didn’t set up right with sugar free Jello and Nutrasweet. So Grams stopped making it. This year I told her, I want it so you make it with all the sugar you need to. And she did make it just for me cause I requested it. It was extra good and I must’ve eaten like half the pan…I have no clue what it did to my blood sugars because I over compensated for it.

Sometimes we have to eat the non-sugarfree stuff, because sometimes, the sugarfree stuff just doesn’t work the same as the sugary stuff.

Santiva - Diabetes 365 Day 80 - Dec 24, 2007

Santiva - Diabetes 365 Day 80 - Dec 24, 2007

Santiva is the new company that took over the test strips and glucose monitor business for BD and thus the company I had to deal with 2 Saturday’s ago when my machine took a dip in the Pacific ocean.

It really sucked not having a backup BD machine and having to switch back to OneTouch meters thus having to pay out of pocket for test strips. I was using the OneTouch meter for 10 days and doing so cost me $100 bucks out of pocket for test strips…it sucked on multiple levels.

We knew in 2006 that BD was bowing out of the glucose monitor market, you’d think that Minimed would’ve made arrangements to get us different machines by a different company so that if something happened to our machines, like an unfortunate meeting with the ocean, we wouldn’t have had to spend so much making sure we had a backup meter…but then again…they’re all about making money off of us, so perhaps it’s me that’s off my rocker…

Snagged - Diabetes 365 Day 79 - Dec 23, 2007

Snagged - Diabetes 365 Day 79 - Dec 23, 2007

It doesn’t happen often, but it happens enough that it frustrates me, and it’s usually when I have my pajamas on, didn’t bother to tuck the tubing to my pump in, and I’m reaching for a glass to fill with juice because my blood sugar is low. It’s always on this one stupid handle that I get snagged and the frustration is even more paramount than it usually would be because my blood sugar is low. And almost everytime, it’s guaranteed, I yell at mom for the handles they put on the cabinets…

It’s just one of those frustrations of wearing the pump and the reminder that my diabetes is still with me, whether i want it there or not…and believe me, I wish I could ditch the pump and the diabetes…life would have less frustrations…

Chapped - Diabetes 365 Day 78 - Dec 22, 2007

These poor chapped lips are not just the result of the weather…they’re also the result of stress induced high blood sugars that cause dehydration…no amount of chapstick is helping these buggers…
